SJCC Members,

As we begin the new golf season, and I begin my tenure of service to all of you at San Juan Country Club, let me take a moment to review the USGA’s position on handicapping and scoreposting.  The golf activities we conduct at SJCC will be more fun and fair if the appropriate scoreposting procedures are followed by everyone.

A BASIC PREMISE UNDERLIES THE USGA HANDICAP SYSTEM, ….WHEN EVERY PLAYER TRIES TO MAKE THE BEST SCORE HE/SHE PLAYS, REGARDLESS OF WHERE THE ROUND IS PLAYED, AND THAT HE/SHE WILL POST EVERY ACCEPTABLE ROUND FOR PEER REVIEW.

Peer Review is the process of providing reasonable and regular opportuntity for members of a golf club to play golf with each other, and provide access to scoring records and USGA handicap indexes for inspection by fellow members and the club’s handicap committee.  Peer review gives reliability and integrity to handicaps at the club, thus insuring our tournament competitions will be more fair for all of SJCC members.

A USGA HANDICAP INDEX MUST BE EARNED!  No player has an inherent right to a USGA handicap without providing full evidence of his/her playing ability to the handicap committee of the club.  Remember too, that your USGA handicap index is a number used to indicate a measurement of a player’s potential scoring ability! …….not a number which allows one to be competitive on a average or bad day of play.

What is an “acceptable round” (postable score)?  Any round of golf played during a region’s active golf season must be posted.  Here at San Juan Country Club our active golf season is year round for scoreposting.  In other parts of the country handicap revisions may stop for the winter months because of the weather.

The EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL SYSTEM should be used for all posted rounds. (ESC)

Course Handicap  Maximum score allowed on any hole
9 or less   Double bogey
10-19 7
20-29 8
30-39  9
40 or more   10

You must post a score under the following conditions:

  • 18 hole round
  • 13 or more holes
  • 9 hole round
  • If you only played 7 or 8 holes in a 9 hole round
  • 18 or 9 hole rounds, played at match play and team competitions where you may have not finished a hole, thus for handicap purposes you would record the score you most likely would have made.

If you played less than your intended (18) or (9) hole round, you would complete the round by simply taking par plus the handicap stroke(s) you would be entitled to had you played those missed holes.

Golf Professionals, Jeff Roth, Ben Facio, and Brandon Baker can help you with your score entry into the computer.  Do not hesitate to ask the staff for help with any scoreposting and handicap issues!

Adjustment of your USGA handicap index by the Handicap Committee can occur depending on the abuse.  Under the most severe circumstances a Handicap Committee is allowed by the USGA to recommend the withdrawal of a handicap index. The USGA Handicap Manual lays out the four situations where adjustments of handicap indexes can occur.

We will monitor the activity of scoreposting against the day’s Tee Sheet.  Ultimately, as a member of San Juan Country Club, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for the integrity and reliability of your handicap system!

Please do not hesitate to ask your Professional Staff questions on any handicapping and/or scoreposting procedures.  We are here to support and help!
